Town Flag

Bullas Town Flag [click to enlarge] The municipal flag of Bullas was officially adopted in September, 2001, after a process initiated in August, 1999 when a commission was created for that purpose. Later on, a regional expert on vexillology (the discipline that studies flags) would join the task.

Given the lack of known documentation related to any possible antecedent of the local standard, a new design was presented, whose colours and elements were of course linked to the history and reality of Bullas.

After considering different options, it was decided that the flag would bear the following colours; wine violet (related to this product, so essential in the local life and economy), green (because of the forest and agricultural richness of the town) and finally white, the colour of the Order of St. James, to which the town belonged for several centuries. Since the regional regulations allow displaying in the local flags some element from the local coats of arms, it was also decided to include the castle, the main element on the coat. The red St. James Cross was placed over the castle, recreating on the one hand the old Standard of this military Order, which consisted in a red cross on a white background and on the other hand, the way the cross was placed in the coat that we can see on top of the parish church sacristy, probably the oldest representation of a local coat of arms .

It was also considered that the violet and green strips, which refer to the land of Bullas , would be placed at the bottom of the ensign, featuring the soil over which the town is settled.

The flag of Bullas was approved by the Government Council of the Region of Murcia on January 12th, 2001 (B.O.R.M. of February 1st), after the favourable report from the Alfonso X El Sabio Academy, commissioned to verify the historical rigour of the project (sketch and justifying report). Almost one year before, on February 3rd, 2000, the ensign had been approved by the Town Council.

The description of the municipal flag of Bullas is the following one:

'Dimensions surface, 2:3. Third, double to height, 4/6 white colour and down 1/6 wine purple and 1/6 green; 1/4 from the flagstaff or 3/4 from the edge, on the white strip, a castle in its colour, and above its tower, a St. James Cross (red), occupying the castle 2/3 of the strip and the cross the remaining 1/3.'
