Town Coat of Arms

Bullas Town Coat of Arms [click to enlarge] The heraldic coat of arms of the town of Bullas dates from the year 1957, when the Spanish Ministries Council, on April 26th, authorised the Bullas Town Council to use it. This is its official description:

'Of one single quarter and Spanish profile; on green hill, medieval castle in its colour, with wide door open, where a small St. James Cross is displayed; among the castle foundations, flowing waters; and, on top, the legend: BULLAS. Royal Crown'.

Previously, the Spanish Royal Academy of History had rejected a sketch for the coat of arms proposed by Salvador Fernández Sánchez, a Town Council officer who had been commissioned by the Mayor for that task, since it was based on certain exaggerations and false historical claims, such as the supposed name of 'Bullae Regiae' in the Visigoth period.

Those who determined in Madrid the design of the coat of arms of Bullas took into account, in their opinion, the most significant aspects of the local history, such as the castle (the first documentary mention of the name of Bullas, in 1254, refers to the castle itself), the great number of springs flowing in the area (a fact traditionally connected to the name of Bullas, from the Latin 'bullae', 'bubbles', a rather probably erroneous interpretation) and finally, the name itself, which presides the blazon.

Despite the fact that those who proceeded to design the first official emblem of the town had little or nothing to do with Bullas, it is true that this fairly resembles the representation of one coat of arms placed on top of the sacristy door in the parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary, which dates from 1803. There we can see a castle crowned by a red St. James Cross, whose tower shows two standards, also red in colour. We have no data about the reasons that led the decorator to use these symbols.

It is necessary to prevent alterations in the correct design of the municipal coat of arms, which sometimes is displayed without some of its elements (the royal crown or the text BULLAS), with changes in their correct colours or even substituting the flowing springs for prickly pears.
