Bullas, Natural Wine Cellar

A contribution to the promotion and commercialization of the territory

The territorial framework

The municipality of Bullas, with an approximated population of 11,500 inhabitants and a municipal surface of 82.2 Km2 is located on the Northwest District in the Region of Murcia, between the towns of Cehegín and Mula. The urban centre is 653 m over the sea level, therefore being one of the towns at a highest altitude in the Region of Murcia.

Bullas possesses some particular natural, socio-economic and cultural features, where the vine and the wine are two of their main protagonists.

The valorisation of these natural, historical and cultural resources is fundamental in order to develop all the economic potential of the area, which has to rival in more and more competitive markets. The quality or the strengthening of products distinguished by a high degree of added value linked to the territory have become the main goal if we want to keep on working for a sustainable development in the area.

At the present we must bear in mind the fact that competitiveness occurs between territories, rather than between products, as Professor Romano Toppan, from the University of Verona, stated in a meeting of the Vinum Est Project recently held in Hungary . Therefore 'the marketing of one product is more efficient, in a period of globalization, the more meanings linked to the territory specificity it contains in its trademark'.

From this point of view, the existence in Bullas of over 2,500 Has devoted to wine production, as well as the presence of a Regulating Council for the Origin Denomination 'Bullas' (an official certificate for wine quality standards), created in 1994, where eight municipalities are integrated, with over 5.500 Has of vineyards, as well as the significance of the wine growing traditions in the area, give us an idea of the importance of the wine for the promotion of this territory, therefore becoming the main differentiating and defining element of the space.

Consequently, it is logical and it must become a fundamental objective to link the promotion of the town and its producing area to the development of an Oenological Tourism, as the element that may complete and complement the important tourist offer of our district.

From this development of the Oenological Tourism in Bullas, where the European projects VINEST and VINUM EST are a clear referral and whose main resources are the Wine Museum and the Wine Route, we can go forward in this field of territorial marketing and, among other objectives, get to reinforce the tourist promotion of Bullas, to recover and valorise the popular culture, to reinforce the cultural identity of the people, as well as the promotion of our wines and the companies that produce them.
