The “Don Pepe Marsilla House Museum. Bullas 1900” seeks to rescue an important part of the local culture of Bullas, recreating the living ways at the beginning of the 20 th century. It also wants to preserve the town's historical heritage represented in this building.
The visit to this House Museum is placed within the Bullas Wine Route, the set of resources which organizes the tourist offer in the municipality around its identity sign, the wine, but also covering other monumental, historical, cultural and natural attractions.
Time has stopped in 1900 in this old noble house located in Bullas' Rosario street, just behind the parish church. It belonged to Don José Marsilla Melgares de Aguilar (1854–1930), commonly known as Don Pepe, who was a rich and powerful landowner but also mayor of Bullas twice. In that symbolical date of 1900 Don Pepe reformed the former old building giving it its today's image. After his death, the house and all his properties passed to his only son and heir, Don Blas Rafael, who lived here until he died in 1992.
As a rich man and mayor, Don Pepe had an active participation in the development of some important public projects in Bullas, such as the arrival of the telephone and telegraph services, the electric power and also the construction of the Old People's Home and Hospital in La Cruz quarter.
Don Pepe's House shows the ostentatious way of life of the local landowners at the beginning of the 20 th century. This fact can be noticed in the library, the living room, the dining room and the bedrooms. The decoration of this noble part of the building is marked by the Modern Style, the main one in Spain and Europe in those years which is characterized by an inspiration in nature, the use of curved lines and the figures stylization.
Owners life was oriented to the back side of the house, the remaining small garden which was also the beginning of “Don Pepe's Garden” many years ago. This part of the building received more Sun hours during the day (a specially important matter in the cold winters of Bullas) and enjoyed more stillness, far away from the noise of the circulating people and carts by the main façade's street. A well assorted kitchen ensured that the owners could enjoy the delicious local dishes every day.
This wide part of the building is a faithful image of the economic activity developed in those years in Bullas as it is the place where the different works and tasks to process the huge productions of Don Pepe's properties took place.
The two underground wine cellars are outstanding places within this area and a clear sample of the wine tradition in Bullas. Wine was elaborated in the L-shaped greater one while the smaller one was dedicated to keep the best wines and liquors destined for the consumption of the family and their guests. With 52 jars, both cellars total capacity was more than 140.000 litres.
The famous pig butcher and also the preparation of its derived took place in the big kitchen (which has plenty of traditional cooking utensils). Olive-oil making, and the storage of many different agricultural products also occupy its place in this working area of the house.
